I have been suspecting and too scared to look calmly for about 3 weeks now but it really is true. From 18 chicks I have 4 hens and 14 roosters. Not sure what to do. I have a list of very patient people waiting for hens (and 1 rooster). and I really want to keep one of the hens (and 1 rooster) for my breeding program, so that leaves 3 hens ready for new homes. Risk of nature... O

Hi from Violet Town.... Most of our hens have been at my mother's place in the country since mid November when we went on the Great Vic Bike ride. We also had so many hatchings that I lost count of the number of chicks - it has been a crazy couple of months, all the chooks are mixed up and some of them even I can't tell apart! Bobby is in town and Colin has moved to the country since he has decided to take over and be the head rooster. Colin has been giving Bobby a hard time so they can't live together any more. We are planning to on holidays for the last couple of weeks of January and my mother is moving off the farm at the end of February so now is a good time to downsize. Bobby is free to a good home if you would like him. He is a beautiful rooster - darker colouring, large wonderful shape, very quiet and a real gentleman. He is able to service up to 5 hens and will produce lovely chicks. We have a couple of little girls still available - they must have been hiding in the daisy bush when I collected all the pullets in December and I missed them. They are between 6 and 10 weeks old. We also need to find homes for some older ladies - most of them are around 4 years old so should live another 4-5 years. They are all healthy and are still laying. I'll keep the grandmas because I couldn't part with my old girls. For the first time we are offering a Clucky Chook Package - a hen and 8 fertile eggs to hatch, along with detailed instructions and of course you can always email me for some advice and I do want to hear how it all works out. Have a look at the For Sale page for more details... I'm off to the garden to take some photos before I make some more updates to these pages this evening.... best wishes and happy chooking, Rosemerry I have finally put some current photos on the photos page.... I think this is Betty and Jessica. I also see that I didn't write anything about the pre christmas chicks. We had 20 chicks hatch and only 1 survive - I'm pretty sure it was a local cat. I was beside myself. Only Julia had one chick left so we have called her Nicola to keep the political theme and sent her to the country for safe keeping until she is a bit bigger. Wow, we put an add on Gumtree last night and 9 young roosters are all gone within a day. 2 went to a family to breed with their Old English Bantams. That should produce some really lovely crosses. 5 went to a great couple to share among their family. It sounds like a baby animal petting farm - crazy fun! And 2 to some local breeders. I hope they all go well and that little Pretzel turns stays a hen for someone. Pretzel looked just like a pretzel when she/he was born, we had to help her out of the egg as it was all too much excitement and she was too tired to do it on her own. She/he is still small and I am really not sure if she is a hen or he is a rooster. Hopefully she/he will do well in her new home.
Jasmine is back from Wembly Primary. She had 6 lovely little chicks and many admirers. It was a very successful experiment. Hopefully we can repeat it next year.
Eustace has found a new family. I hope he will be be happy with you Suzie and do all the right things! It sounds like a wonderful place with a lovely variety of chooks. We have sold a few chicks and have a few hens on waiting lists so we only have eggs for sale and roosters available free now. Maybe more in Feb but not really sure at the moment. JoJo would like some more eggs to hatch but it is too close to Christmas now so I have taken the nesting boxes out overnight and hopefully she will forget about it soon. Jasmine is on a visit to Wembley Primary so the grade 4 students can watch as her chicks are born. There are 7 eggs and the chicks are due Wed 7th and the eggs are peeping wildly so all looking good so far. I hope some students add some comments here....
Josephine has 7 new little chicks, they were all very strong and we didn't have to help any hatch. 1 of the 8 eggs did nothing and wasn't fertile when I had a final look. We should have candled they to check earlier - I always say that but never get around to it. Josephine is a much better mother than Beatrix and has been busy showing the chicks how to eat their weetbix. This batch has 6 little light brown chicks and 2 golden yellow. I wonder if any will be as light as Josephine?
