Hi from Violet Town.... Most of our hens have been at my mother's place in the country since mid November when we went on the Great Vic Bike ride. We also had so many hatchings that I lost count of the number of chicks - it has been a crazy couple of months, all the chooks are mixed up and some of them even I can't tell apart! Bobby is in town and Colin has moved to the country since he has decided to take over and be the head rooster. Colin has been giving Bobby a hard time so they can't live together any more. We are planning to on holidays for the last couple of weeks of January and my mother is moving off the farm at the end of February so now is a good time to downsize. Bobby is free to a good home if you would like him. He is a beautiful rooster - darker colouring, large wonderful shape, very quiet and a real gentleman. He is able to service up to 5 hens and will produce lovely chicks. We have a couple of little girls still available - they must have been hiding in the daisy bush when I collected all the pullets in December and I missed them. They are between 6 and 10 weeks old. We also need to find homes for some older ladies - most of them are around 4 years old so should live another 4-5 years. They are all healthy and are still laying. I'll keep the grandmas because I couldn't part with my old girls. For the first time we are offering a Clucky Chook Package - a hen and 8 fertile eggs to hatch, along with detailed instructions and of course you can always email me for some advice and I do want to hear how it all works out. Have a look at the For Sale page for more details... I'm off to the garden to take some photos before I make some more updates to these pages this evening.... best wishes and happy chooking, Rosemerry

I have finally put some current photos on the photos page.... I think this is Betty and Jessica. I also see that I didn't write anything about the pre christmas chicks. We had 20 chicks hatch and only 1 survive - I'm pretty sure it was a local cat. I was beside myself. Only Julia had one chick left so we have called her Nicola to keep the political theme and sent her to the country for safe keeping until she is a bit bigger. Lettie had only 4 chicks hatch. 3 from Rodney (my Mother's rooster & hens) and 1 from Bobby. Seems everyone has a poor hatch rate this year. Anyway the 4 that did hatch are perfect. No spots of colours anywhere not even on the new feathers. I'm praying they are all hens. Lettie is lovely with them and is very patient teaching them to eat their weetbix.
Jo Jo left her 6 chicks and returned to the rooster, when the chicks were only 4 weeks old. They are doing well but get lots of extra attention from me so are extremely tame and always come when they are called. I am getting so many requests for eggs I can't keep up. The pullets are laying but the eggs are too small for hatching yet. All quiet in the chook yard, except for Beatrix that is. She makes more noise than either rooster. She is becoming a really grumpy old lady. Sometimes she thinks she is a goose and really gets the honking going. She is excellent - so much fun having a chook with personality.
We have only 1 free rooster left - perhaps I should name him, something exotic because he is so golden and fair. Any ideas? Jojo is still sitting on her 8 eggs. None of them have blown up but I floated all the left over ones and had about 1 in 5 looking dodgy so it will be interesting to see how many hatch. We ate the good ones in our Shrove Tuesday pancakes. :) We have lots of new fresh eggs - about 4 each day, so if anyone wants to buy any please send a note. |
