We have sold so many little hens I am losing track but there are only 3 left. Lots of people are taking roosters too and we only have 8 left. Only one is crowing in the morning yet and the sound just makes you laugh. They are not yet in the proper coop but they will move across next weekend.

While I was away on the weekend my son the salesman - Ted, sold so many chooks I can't believe it. We have only a single 8 week old pullet left ($30). I haven't listed it on the for sale page as there is only one left and we're happy to keep her if no one asks! We haven't had to cull a single rooster yet which always makes me happy particularly when they are so promising. We are going to take a gamble with the up coming batch of chooks as we all reckon we can spot a few hens and we'd rather send people home with hens if we can.
Please send a comment or suggestion or pass my site on to anyone you think will be interested. Had a lovely weekend with my mother in Violet Town. She has some lovely young chicks too, seems everyone is having a bumper chicken year. Mum's rooster is stunning.
Betrix's eggs hatched this morning - I had forgotten it was today! 7 little fluffy chicks - all look lovely. One has a dark spot on her head, there are a couple of lighter ones and one a bit darker but all very similar really. No black lacing like the last hatching. No sign of life from the last egg. We haven't candled the eggs so didn't have a clue which were fertile. We have been getting 100% fertility this season, so wasn't worried. A couple of the earliest chicks spent a few hours cuddling up on the sofa with my daughter who hasn't been feeling well - very sweet and they were not at all stressed. Have a good weekend
I have given 8 eggs to Josephine - I couldn't stand it anymore and there was no convincing her to get off the nest! She has tucked them all in and made little clucking noises to them. She is just so fat and healthy, all her feathers are smooth and colours clean. This is her second setting for the season. The first set worked out well - 10 out of 10 eggs hatched - unfortunately a crow got one in the first few days. From the remaining 9 we have had 5 hens and 4 cockerels. One of the cockerels is large with quite dark feathers, we have called him Frank and he looks like next seasons main man at this stage.
The other 3 cockerels are lighter and starting to get golden feathers on their necks - one in particular is strong and has great feet feathers - he should be a great breeder is anyone is interested in him. All 3 are free if anyone would like one. Beatix is setting 8 eggs that are due on Friday 11 November. I think this will be our last batch for the year as they start to run past Christmas then although Josephine is trying to convince me otherwise .
Jo Jo & Bella have 11 chicks each, all born on Friday 14 October. They look great in the yard, all the different sizes, all mixed up together. Wow, first blog!
Just a background our current chooks are: Sam, the Main Man, Eustace who is pretty useless and a pretty boy, Bella because she is beautiful, Jo Jo who had some spangling when she was young but is a lovely large dark hen now. Nelly & Lettie who I still can't tell apart. Josephine my blondie and Jasmine who is Josephine's sister and yet to go clucky. and Beatrix, little dark and feisty - my favourite. |
