Nicola is also sitting on 10 eggs now. (I thought it was Betty but it wasn't - oops, too many chooks) They are due the last weekend in October.
Liza hatched 6 eggs from the 10. 3 were grandma eggs and 3 were little brown eggs so that proves nothing at all - haha The chicks are all cuties and one is darker than the others so I am hoping she is a keeper. We have put 10 eggs each under Lucy and Louise, due to hatch on Sunday 19 October. I tried to choose all eggs from the youngest hens....
Lucy hatched 10 eggs. Yes, 10 hatched from 10 eggs. Louise hatched 8 eggs. but now the chicks are all mixed up so they have 9 each! Louise is a little stressed about the whole thing but Lucy is loving it. In all the excitement of the fox, I didn't check Thelma and she has 8 chicks all fluffy and lovely. Photo coming soon. 2 eggs were remaining and she got off the nest so I took that as a sign.
It seems that the grandma's eggs are not fertile this year - they are very large so easy to identify. I have 10 eggs under Liza but I sorted them. 5 are from the young bantams and 5 are from Grandmas so we will see next week when they hatch. |
